Abstract

Malasseziae are yeast like fungi .They have been known to man as a member of the human cutaneous commensal flora.They have lipophilic growth requirements excepting M.pachydermatis, and hence colonise the seborrheic parts of the skin They cause a wide range of superficial mycoses and systemic diseases in suitably predisposed individual. To speciate Malassezia by phenotypic methods and to confirm by gene sequencing, in patients suffering from superficial mycoses A sequential use of KOH, Gram s stain, urease test, catalase test, esculin hydrolysis tween assimilation test and temperature tolerance studies helps greatly in early speciation of Malassezia even in the resource restricted laboratory which was confirmed by gene sequencing.
