Abstract: | Crystals are the pillars of modern technology. The modern technological developments depend greatly on the availability of suitable crystal. It is used in production of laser, semiconductors devices, diodes, some magnetic devices, optical devices, superconductors, telecommunication etc. In spite of great technological advancements in the recent years, we are still in early stages with respect to the growth of several important crystals. Natural crystals like quartz, calcite and diamond etc. are extensively used in a variety of technological application. But these crystals are less available and they may contain impurity and it is not possible to grow larger single crystals which are useful in modern industries. The large numbers of crystals are used in electro, electronic, optical and in industries and for the modern society, raise in standard of living is desirable. This also requires newer materials in the form of crystals. Hence today s demand is to grow large crystals with high purity and symmetry. There are several methods for synthesis and growth of crystals. Each method of crystal growth has its own merits and limitations. Of all the methods of crystal growth, gel method is relatively simple and inexpensive but demands great patience and vigilance for its successful use.The present thesis describes detailed studies made on the growth of undoped and doped strontium oxalate crystals in silica gel and agar gel. Description of observations and results of growth and characterization of these crystals embodies the present thesis. |
