Abstract: newline vii newlineAbstract newlineComparatively from old times, the recent time is the period of technological development which shows advances in the materials synthesis and their uses. Latest scientific skills are useful in the development and designing of multifunctional composite materials. and#699;Multifunctional Materialand#700; can be defined as any material or material-based system which integrally combines two or more constituents giving rise to unique properties e.g. nanocomposites. Thus, attempts have been made to synthesis the multifunctional nanocomposite with applicability in diverse fields. In present work, the new and novel multifunctional nanocomposite has been fabricated and explored for the remediation of pollutants from water system and as stimuli responsive drug delivery system. newlineSodium dodecyl sulphate incorporated ironsilicophosphate (SDS-FeSP) nanocomposite has been synthesized by the co-precipitation method. It poses good ion exchange capacity, high stability, reproducibility and selectivity for heavy metal ions. The characterization of synthesized SDS-FeSP nanocomposite was done by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infra red spectroscopy (FTIR). The various physicochemical properties such as pH titrations, elution behaviour and thermal stability of SDS-FeSP nanocomposite were examined to find the nature of material in relation to its ion exchange behaviour. The study revealed that synthesized nanocomposite SDS-FeSP has higher ion exchange capacity (1.45 meq/g) compared to its inorganic part FeSP(0.4 meq/g). Sorption studies for some alkaline earth metals and heavy metals shows marked selectivity towards Zn2+ and Mg2+ metal ions. Thus its analytical utility was accomplished by performing some binary as well as synthetic separations of metal ions on the column of SDS-FeSP nanocomposite. Thus SDS-FeSP nanocomposite may offers exciting opportunities in environmental remediation effectively. newlineSDS-FeSP nanocomposite has been explored as stimuli responsive drug carrier for controlled release of ondansetron under simulated GIT conditions. The drug (ondansetron) loading efficiency of SDS-FeSP nanocomposite was found to be 48.2%. The maximum drug release of about 45.38% at pH 2.2 has been observed for SDS-FeSP nanocomposite . This shows that the drug release is maximum in acidic pH. The cytotoxicity studies revealed the non toxic nature of SDS-FeSP nanocomposite. newlineviii newlineGraphical Abstract newlineThe present study revealed that the synthesized nanocomposite is a new class of advanced multifunctional materials which can be employed effectively for diverse applications.
