Abstract: | The Thesis consists of Eight Chapters containing the research work carried out on the water quality of Guntur (Dt), Andhra Pradesh, India. Chapter I Introduction Environmental chemistry is not a single disciplinary science but a multi-disciplinary science which encompasses many vastly different fields such as chemistry, physics, life sciences, agriculture, medical science, public health, sanitary engineering etc. In this chapter discussion on different areas of the Guntur District and water quality were included. The Guntur district has been gifted with the vast surface and ground water resources. About 3.56 lakh hectare area is irrigated by canals and it has ground water resources of 3.63 lakh hectares. It comprises 57 mandals under administrative control of 3 divisions namely Narasaraopet, Guntur and Tenali. The district has 729 villages and 1036 hamlets. Chapter II Various aspects of Water Pollution Water is essential for the survival of any form of life. All biochemical reactions in the biological systems take place in water medium. In addition, water is required for various domestic purposes, irrigation, shipping, sanitation, power generation and industries. With exploding population resulting in urbanization, industrialization, agriculture etc, the demands of water supply have been increasing tremendously. Different causes for water pollution have been discussed. Chapter III Experimental Methods: Methods to determine Physico-Chemical parameters of water like Electrical Conductivity (E.C), Total Hardness, Calcium, Magnesium, Chloride, Dissolved Oxygen, Biochemical Oxygen demand, pH, Electrical Conductivity, Total Dissolved Solids, Total Suspended Solids. Alkalinity were discussed. The procedures which we followed were also included. Chapter IV Water Quality Index WQI indicates the quality of water in terms of index number which represents overall quality of water for any intended use. |
