Abstract: | Power quality refers to maintaining a sinusoidal waveform of bus voltages at newlinerated voltage and rated frequency .Power quality problems in voltage, current and newlinefrequency result in failure or malfunction of electrical equipment. Particularly, in newlinemicrogrid connected utility systems the frequency, voltage and current quality are newlineaffected due to power electronic loads. Further , all switching loads also generate newlineharmonics ,which affect the performance of the microgrid systems. These harmonics newlineplay an important role in the poor performance of the microgrid systems. newlineA microgrid connected power generation source, like a wind power generator newlineis affected by frequency deviation, voltage and current harmonics. The Fixed Speed newlineInduction Type Wind Turbine Generator (FSIWTG) is capable of producing high newlinepower but the power production depends on the velocity of the wind . If it generates newlinemore power, it causes high frequency deviations in a microgrid. newlineIn this research, power quality issues like voltage sag, voltage swell, newlineharmonics, frequency deviations, real and reactive power flow and their effects are newlineanalyzed in a microgrid utility and a Fixed Speed Wind Turbine Power newlineGenerator(FSIWTG). Here these power quality issues are analyzed and in order to newlineminimize them, two custom power devices (Unified Power Quality Conditioner and newlineMatrix Converter) merge into one. newlineThe matrix converter is an efficient power frequency regulator, but it has a newlinefew drawbacks as it produces current harmonics, voltage harmonics and its voltage newlinetransfer ratio is limited to 0.866. In conventional matrix converter, the passive filter newlineis used to mitigate the matrix converter voltage and also the current harmonics, but newlinethe passive filters will not be effective if there is any deviation in the power newlinefrequency. The passive filters do not compensate the drawbacks of the voltage newlinetransfer ratio. newlineThis research finds a common solution to the matrix converter s power newlinequality issues and the microgrid s power quality problems.
