Abstract: | Intermittent claudication is a cardinal symptom of lower-extremity peripheral arterial disease (PAD). It is defined by leg muscle pain, cramping and fatigue brought on by newlineambulation/exercise; relieved on rest; and caused by inadequate blood supply (Meru et al., 2006). PAD weakens the lower limbs and increases the risk of death via cardiovascular diseases and is reported to have deleterious effect on the quality of life (Cassar, 2006). Intermittent Claudication is an extremely important marker of atheroma. More than 60% patients suffering from intermittent claudication also suffer from coronary diseases and 40% of all patients die of stroke within 5 years of acquiring the disease. PAD is highly prevalent in USA, which has more than 12 million of its population suffering from it. The condition is more worrisome as the world population is aging. (Garcia, 2006; Diehm, Kareem and newlineLawall, 2004). This has resulted in renewed interest among researchers and physicians in understanding the pathophysiology and upgrading the currently available therapeutic category of drugs for treatment of intermittent claudication. newline |
