Abstract: Weirsareacommonandusefulhydraulicstructureforawiderangeofapplications(egcanalspondsriversreservoirsandothers)TheyhavebeenwidelyusedforthepurposeofflowmeasurementGenerallytheyareusedasnormalweirswhichcausewatertopoolbehindthemwhileallowingwatertoflowsteadilyovertheirtopsposeproblemsofsubmergenceupstreamoftheweirduetolargeaffluxrequiredtopassthedischargedownstreamForpassingmoredischargewithlowheadtheweirsofvariousmodifiedplanformhavebeensuggestedinthepasttoenhancetheirdischargingcapacitywithminimumheadovertheweirsandtorestricttheaffluxAninnovativeandeffectivewayofincreasingthespillwaycapacityistousealabyrinthweirTheconceptofthelabyrinthweiristovarytheplanshapeofthecresttoincreasetheeffectivecrestlengthItisparticularlysuitedforusewherethespillwaywidthisrestrictedorwherethefloodsurchargespaceislimitedThelabyrinthisrelativelylowcostwhencomparedwithgatedspillwaysandthishasledtoitsuseinconjunctionwiththeraisingofdamsforincreasedstoragespaceAlabyrinthweirhasadvantagescomparedtothestraightoverflowweirandthestandardogeecrestLabyrinthweirscanbeusedtoincreaseoutletcapacityforagivenspillwaycrestelevationandlengthortoincreasestoragebyraisingthecrestwhilemaintainingspillwaycapacityThesestructuresofferseveraladvantageswhencomparedtolinearweirstructuresLabyrinthweirsprovideanincreaseincrestlengthforagivenchannelwidththerebyincreasingflowcapacityforagivenupstreamhead.Asaresultoftheincreasedflowcapacitytheseweirsrequirelessfreeboardintheupstreamreservoirthanlinearweirswhichfacilitatesfloodroutingandincreasesreservoirstoragecapacityunderbaseflowconditions(weirheightmaybeincreased)LabyrinthweirscanthereforebeusedtoaparticularadvantagewherethewidthofachannelisrestrictedandaweirisrequiredtopassarangeofdischargeswithalimitedvariationinupstreamwaterlevelButacollectivecomparativeanalysisofdifferentplanformlabyrinthweirsisscarceFurtheravailableinformationoneffectofvariousparametersonthedischargingcapacityoflabyrinthweirisalsoverylittle.Informationrelatedtotheequationanddesignchartisavailableonlyforaparticularplanformweirinvestigatedbyvario
