Abstract: | Weirsareacommonandusefulhydraulicstructureforawiderangeofapplications(egcanalspondsriversreservoirsandothers)TheyhavebeenwidelyusedforthepurposeofflowmeasurementGenerallytheyareusedasnormalweirswhichcausewatertopoolbehindthemwhileallowingwatertoflowsteadilyovertheirtopsposeproblemsofsubmergenceupstreamoftheweirduetolargeaffluxrequiredtopassthedischargedownstreamForpassingmoredischargewithlowheadtheweirsofvariousmodifiedplanformhavebeensuggestedinthepasttoenhancetheirdischargingcapacitywithminimumheadovertheweirsandtorestricttheaffluxAninnovativeandeffectivewayofincreasingthespillwaycapacityistousealabyrinthweirTheconceptofthelabyrinthweiristovarytheplanshapeofthecresttoincreasetheeffectivecrestlengthItisparticularlysuitedforusewherethespillwaywidthisrestrictedorwherethefloodsurchargespaceislimitedThelabyrinthisrelativelylowcostwhencomparedwithgatedspillwaysandthishasledtoitsuseinconjunctionwiththeraisingofdamsforincreasedstoragespaceAlabyrinthweirhasadvantagescomparedtothestraightoverflowweirandthestandardogeecrestLabyrinthweirscanbeusedtoincreaseoutletcapacityforagivenspillwaycrestelevationandlengthortoincreasestoragebyraisingthecrestwhilemaintainingspillwaycapacityThesestructuresofferseveraladvantageswhencomparedtolinearweirstructuresLabyrinthweirsprovideanincreaseincrestlengthforagivenchannelwidththerebyincreasingflowcapacityforagivenupstreamhead.Asaresultoftheincreasedflowcapacitytheseweirsrequirelessfreeboardintheupstreamreservoirthanlinearweirswhichfacilitatesfloodroutingandincreasesreservoirstoragecapacityunderbaseflowconditions(weirheightmaybeincreased)LabyrinthweirscanthereforebeusedtoaparticularadvantagewherethewidthofachannelisrestrictedandaweirisrequiredtopassarangeofdischargeswithalimitedvariationinupstreamwaterlevelButacollectivecomparativeanalysisofdifferentplanformlabyrinthweirsisscarceFurtheravailableinformationoneffectofvariousparametersonthedischargingcapacityoflabyrinthweirisalsoverylittle.Informationrelatedtotheequationanddesignchartisavailableonlyforaparticularplanformweirinvestigatedbyvario |
