The average development cost of a new chemical entity (NCE) is approximately newlineUS$500 million to US$2000 million.1 In-order to develop new methods of administration for an existing drug, it often costs significantly less, which results in improved efficacy and bio availability together with reduced dosing frequency to newlineminimize side effects. Hence, pharmaceutical companies have to strive hard under constant stress to maximize the full prospective of a drug candidate at an early stage of its life cycle. This rationale can be achieved by incorporating the drug into various drug newlinedelivery systems. This can lead to extended patent life and convenient dosage forms that surmount previously presented administration problems.2 Pharmaceutical research is leading towards innovations in the area of drug delivery at much faster pace as newlinecompared to the last two decades. Figure 1.1, shows the present market scenario on newlinevarious drug delivery technologies. The global market for advanced drug delivery newlinesystem announced to almost US$139 billion in 2009 and is projected to increase to newlineUS$196.4 billion by 2014, according to an August 2009 report from BCC research. The newlinelargest segment of the market is focused on targeted drug delivery, which reached newlineUS$50.9 billion in 2009, and is expected to increase to US$80.2 billion in 2014 newline
