Abstract: | Studies on synthesis, physicochemical characterisation and structural assessment of mixedligand fluoro/chloro/bromo/iodo complexes of nickel (II) incorporating biologically relevant coligands is the focal theme of the work described in the present thesis. The entire matter of the thesis is distributed over six chapters (Chapter I-VI). Each chapter is virtually complete in itself including the references. The descriptions of the results of work undertaken for the present Ph.D. research are presented in Chapter III through to Chapter VI. These Chapters (III-VI) include a short Introduction justifying the specific objective of the work followed by a section on Experimental describing the synthesis and then Results and Discussion and finally the relevant references. The first Chapter (Chapter I) dealing with Introduction provides a background pertaining to the work described in the thesis. The significance, interests and scope of nickel(II) coordination chemistry has been portrayed in this Chapter with citations from contemporary literature. Diversity of structures, synthetic procedures, and biomimetic relevance of nickel (II) coordination compounds has found particular attention in this Chapter. Fluoride. being unique among halogens, study of its interaction with nickel (II) in the presence of biorelevant N, O-donor coligands in aqueous solution has been set as broad objective of the present Ph.D. research programme. Chloride, bromide and iodide were also used as primary ligand on few occasions. In Chapter II, is included the details of instruments used and analytical methods for solid-state characterisation of the complexes. Chapter III of the thesis is concerned with synthesis, characterisation and assessment of structures of mixedligandfluoro complexes of nickel(II) incorporating natural aminoacides or peptide as coligands. The complexes reported herein are of the type NH4 [NiF(ser) (OH)]. H2O, NH4 [NiF2(val)(OH)], NH4 [NiF(glut) (H2O)], and molecular [NiF (Cys) (H2O)], [NiF (asp) (H2O)2] and [NiF (glygly) (OH)]. |
