Abstract: Quality Assessment of Water Sources used for Domestic Purposes in and Around Lumding Town of Assam. Water - the elixir of life system and without it life cannot exist. The diverse uses of water for drinking, cooking, washing, bathing and a lot of other purposes. The presence of safe and reliable drinking water is an essential prerequisite for a stable community. So, quality of water is to be determined for a locality of various purposes. In this thesis quality of water in and around of Lumding Town and its adjoining areas to be determined from selected sources with respect to an approximate number of water quality parameters and statistical treatment of the datas to draw up various correlations and ion-equivalence and ion balance of the major cations and anions and standard deviations and 98 percentile are studied. The entire matter of the thesis constitutes by four Chapters (Chapter 1 to 4), Including Bibliography and Appendix - I and II. Chapter - 1 This chapter dealing with the introduction of the thesis. This chapter begins with brief discussion of water as the most and natural resource, life sustaining system and the availability of water for drinking and other purposes. A literal review on quality of water in India and abroad has been discussed for drinking purposes. Importants pollutants, freshwater pollutants, ground water pollutants, pollutants due to wastes are highlighted as they affect the potable water. The quality criteria for water which are used for various domestic purposes and in agriculture and the problem associated with drinking is specially stressed. The water quality of water in India has been briefly discussed with particular reference to North East India and Assam through a discussion of the significant contribution from various research database works. In North Eatern Region and Assam, there are not sufficient values for drinking water quality and this work would be helpful to know the quality of water. Chapter - 2 The second chapter deals with the study area of Lumding and its...
