Abstract: Studies on coordination complexes are important in view of their relevance in the chemical industries and biology. In view of the variety of structures that may result depending on the nature of the ligand and the metal, coordination compounds may display chemical and physical properties including catalytic activity, electrical conductivity, and non-linear optical activity (NLO) to make themselves suitable for practical applications. Some of the physical properties are accentuated by the formation of polymers based on coordination complexes. Our aim in the present investigations has been the development of transition metal coordination compounds based on the potentially bridging ligands shown below and to study their structural and physico-chemical properties in detail. CHAPTER 1: General Introduction The first chapter of the present thesis gives an overview of the pros and cons of taking up synthetic and structural investigation on coordination compounds. These include comments on the versatility of coordination compounds, molecular and crystal structure determination by the method of x-ray diffraction, on metal carboxylate compounds with suitable examples, NLO behaviour of coordination compounds, coordination polymers and the supramolecular aggregation of coordination complexes. Aims and objectives of our investigations have also been outlined at the end of this chapter. CHAPTER 2: Studies on a few Coordintion Compounds containing 4- Cyanopyridine as a ligand In Chapter 2, four compounds of copper(II) with 4-cyanopyridine as a ligand have been discussed. The synthetic reactions carried out in methanol at room temperature are: CuCl2 .2H2O + 2 (4-CNpy) + 4(CH3CO2Na) Cu(CH3CO2)4(4-CNpy)2 (1) CuCl2 .2H2O + 2(4-CNpy) + 2(C6H5CO2Na) Cu(C6H5CO2)4(4-CNpy)2 (2) CuCl2 .2H2O + 2 (4-CNpy) + 2(C6H5CO2Na) [CuCl2(4-CNpy)2] (3) CuCl2 .2H2O + 2 (4-CNpy) + 2(CH3CO2Na) Cu(CH3CO2)Cl(4-CNpy)2.2H2O (4).
