Abstract: Oxidative stress is defined as an imbalance between production of free radicals and reactive products to produce reactive oxygen species ROS and their elimination by protective mechanisms referred as antioxidants The imbalance between them leads to damage of important biomolecules such as proteins lipids or DNA with potential impact on the whole organism In humans oxidative stress may be involved in many diseases including atherosclerosis parkinsons disease heart failure myocardial infarction Alzheimers disease schizophrenia cancer etc Enzymes such as Superoxide Dismutase SOD Catalase CAT and Glutathione Peroxidase GPX are cellular defenses against ROS Many antioxidants are used to prevent and treat some diseases caused by ROS like vitamin C vitamin E and some minerals such as zinc selenium and copper that is components of antioxidant proteins Free radicals are atoms, molecules or ions with unpaired electrons that are highly unstable and active towards chemical reactions with other moleculesFree radicals have different types of reaction mechanisms they can react with surrounding molecules by electron donation reducing newline
