dc.description.abstractThe District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) were established all over the country for the purpose of achieving quality education and to remove the backlog of untrained teachers. DIETs have been established in the countryandenvisagedaspace-settinginstitutionsforpre-serviceandin-service teacher training of elementary school teachers and have been given the responsibilityoftakingcareofallaspectsofelementaryeducationinrespective districts. DIETis a nodal agency for providing academic and resource support at the grassroot level for the success of various strategies and programmes undertakenintheareasofelementaryeducation.ItisexpectedfromDIETsthat teacherstrainedbythemwillnotonlyprovidequalityeducationinschoolsbut alsoprovidecontextuallyandsociallyrelevanteducationandcouldworkinall areaslikehilly,tribalandrural.However,itisnoticedthatDIETshavenotbeen able to achieve the purpose for which these were established.
