dc.description.abstractAlthough, Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is globally prevalent, it is usually an newlineunder-diagnosed and under-treated nutritional deficiency.1 It can be seen in newlineindividuals irrespective of their age, gender, race and geography.2,3 In India, newlineprevalence of VDD is 70% 100%, in the general population, while, among children newlinebetween 5-20 years of age it varies between 37.8%-97.5%.4 In a study by Bhat S M, newlineLasrado I, SG Rajeshwari, G.Arpitha, P.Krishnananda, Rao P 5 in south Karnataka, newlineIndia, a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in males in the 0-10 and 20-30 newlineyears age group was recorded while in females higher prevalence of the vitamin newlinedeficiency was recorded in the 20-30 years and 30-40 years age group. The causes of newlineVDD in Indian children were reported as minimum dietary intake of vit D and newlinecalcium, low socio-economic status, pigmented skin and insufficient sun exposure or newlinephysical activities.6-10 In a study carried out by Mandlik R, Kajale N, Ekbote V, newlinePatwardhan V, Khadilkar V, Chiplonkar S et al11 in school going children, high newlineprevalence of Vit D deficiency was found in the age group of 6-12 years.12-15 newlineDuration of exposure to sunlight and body fat percentage were found to be the two newlineimportant determinants of serum 25(OH)D concentration16 in children. newline
