dc.description.abstract | Plant-based medicine plays a vital role in cancer management and 60% of currently used anticancer drugs are derived from plant resources. In the present investigation, entitled Study on anticarcinogenic activity of Indian medicinal plant - Polycarpaea corymbosa. Lamk , the whole plant of Polycarpaea corymbosa was screened for anticancer activity. The dried powder of WPC was extracted sequentially using different polarities of solvents like petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and ethanol. The EEPC had the highest yield (16.56%) when compared to other extracts. The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of phytosterols, fixed oils and fats in PEEPC. In EAEPC, alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycosides, fixed oils and fats, saponins, phenolic compounds, tannins, protein and amino acid were present. The EEPC contains alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycoside, saponins, phenolic compounds, tannins, protein and aminoacid and flavonoids. The extracts were subjected to in vitro antioxidant studies. The extracts were tested for their activities against DPPH, nitric oxide, hydroxyl, super oxide radicals. All the extracts tested possessed antioxidant activity. The present findings indicated that EEPC exhibited significant antioxidant activity by inhibiting DPPH, nitric oxide radical, hydroxyl radical and super oxide anion radical scavenging activities. In addition, all the extracts were estimated for the total phenolic and flavonoid content. EEPC was found to contain a noticeable amount of phenolics and flavonoids than other extracts and hence play a major role in controlling oxidative stress. The various extracts of WPC were subjected to in vitro cytotoxic activity on MCF-7, HL-60, HepG2, HT-29 and PC3 cell lines. These findings from the biochemical basis for the use of compounds from WPC as anticarcinogenic, at least in part, through modulation of apoptosis. Furthermore, in vivo studies are needed to investigate the possible mechanism of action of isolated compounds derived from the plant against cancer. newline | |
