Abstract: The study contributes significantly to the literature by generating empirical information on the causes and processes of expansion of urban slums, and the demographic and socio-economic conditions of the slum dwellers of Ludhiana City of Punjab. The study found that the socio-economic conditions of the slum dwellers are deplorable in the study area. The slum dwellers working in the informal sector earn low incomes and lack access to education, housing, and civic amenities. The study suggests some pre-emptive and curative policy options to overcome the socio-economic problems faced by the slum dwellers. newline
