Abstract: | Drinking water is the fundamental element required by all human beings. The water is supplied to all the consumers through a proper water distribution system. Designing the water distribution network (WDN) is a crucial part of the water supply system. In India, there exists an improper supply of water in many regions; therefore, developing a new water distribution network is needed. The Athivilai village of Tamilnadu, India, is the study area for this research since there is an improper water supply due to the growing demands in the summer. The study area has an uneven terrain with elevation ranging from 27 m to 87 m. Due to this high elevation difference, the proper design of the water distribution network is important to attain the required pressure at the junctions. The design of the network must be such that it can supply water with adequate pressure throughout the design period with cost-effectiveness and longer life. Therefore, many researchers have focused on more optimal techniques for the effective design of WDN. This study considered three factors, such as water tank location selection, suitable pipe material selection and pipe failure risk zoning, to obtain an effective design for the new WDN. newlineLocating a water tank in uneven terrain regions is crucial as it affects the pressure distribution and the economical pipe sizes in the water distribution network. This study assessed the water tank location using an Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Geographical Information System (GIS). Various criteria that influence the tank location, such as population, elevation, slope, distance to the road, and land use land cover were considered for this study. newline |
