Abstract: Wound healing is a natural phenomenon of the body. Other than detrimental effect on textile materials, bacteria cause complication on open wounds. To overcome these disadvantages wound dressing with antimicrobial finishes are applied on the injured portion so that the rate of healing can be improved. This research indicates the significant role of medicinal plants in fabrication of antibacterial bandages thereby promoting a sustainable socio-economic environment. The research was to explore the selected flora Nimar region (Burhanpur and Sendhwa, Madhya Pradesh, India) for their potential applications in textile-based wound dressings. Medicinal plants available in huge amount in Nimar region are guava, aakada, marigold, parijat and durva were initially identified as medicinal plant sources for fabrication of bandages. The antibacterial effect of dried powdered leaves of medicinal plants was assessed using the agar-well diffusion method. The plants leaves were extracted at room temperature using three different solvents: water, ethanol, and methanol. The study has revealed that guava and aakada leaves extracted in methanol have good antibacterial properties. These two plant extracts were further applied on textiles by exhaust method i.e. cotton and bamboo fibre and fabrics. The fabrics are procured from market as per standard used for medical purpose. It was observed that mordanted fabrics with harad have good antibacterial properties. Further in vitro cytotoxicity and in vitro wound healing assay confirmed that about 93.0 % of wound was recovered within 24 hr and toxicity was also less than 30.0%; so selected plant source did not possess toxic effect.
