dc.description.abstract | The usage of electronic units has grown stealthily in the past few newlinedecades. This has directly impacted the power quality of the network by newlinetarnishing the power flow with harmonics. Harmonics is one of the leading newlinepower quality issue prevailing in any power system. Globally, the Institute of newlineElectrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) put forth the harmonics newlineregulatory standard IEEE Std. 519-2014. The standard imposes acceptable newlineharmonic limits in the line-utility interface. Although the International newlineElectrotechnical Commission (IEC) recommends the mitigation of voltage newlineharmonics when it exceeds limits, the IEEE standards insist on the newlinemeasurement of current harmonics periodically. When too many end users newlinedraw harmonic current from the same voltage source, it would gradually newlineincrease the voltage harmonic level. Hence, the Central Electricity Authority newline(CEA) in India, endorses practices to mitigate current harmonics that exceeds newlinelimits. With their notion to make a healthy and harmonic-free grid, certain newlinepenalty mechanism has been deployed for the customers who violate the newlineharmonic regulatory standards. newlineThe Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) newlineendorses the harmonic limits set by CEA Regulation 2007 (Technical newlinestandards for connectivity to the grid). The Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) newlineof voltage should be within 5% at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) and newlinethe THD of current should not exceed 8%. Some of the common practices that newlineaddresses harmonic issues are the utilisation of filters at the point of common newlinecoupling. newline | |
