Abstract: In this research work, hard turning was performed on AISI 4340 steel material. This hardened material has wide applications in areas that require high wear resistance, thermal stability and fatigue strength in automobile transmission, aircraft structural components, energy production and several other applications towards mechanical engineering. Uncoated tungsten carbide was selected as the cutting tool material. Hard turning operation was carried out i) dry, cryogenic liquid carbon dioxide and cryogenic liquid nitrogen cutting conditions with a feed rate of (0.10,0.15 and 0.20 mm/rev), cutting spped of (70,80 and 90 m/min) towards a constant depth of cut of 0.75 mm ii) optimization through grey based response surface methodology under dry, cryogenic liquid carbon dioxide and cryogenic liquid nitrogen cutting condition with a feed rate (0.10,0.15 and 0.20 mm/rev), cutting speed of (70,80 and 90 m/min) and depth of cut (0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 mm). newline
