Abstract: | Heterocycles are a vitally important class of organic compounds. It is estimated that newlinearound two-thirds of all organic compounds belong to this group. The most significant utility newlineof heterocycles lies in their prevalence as essential structural components of medicines, active newlinepharmaceutical ingredients, agrochemicals, natural products etc. Indole and furan are two newlineprominent examples of electron-rich heterocycles that are commonly found in medicines and newlinenatural compounds with potent and diverse bioactivity. There are at least 17 FDA-approved newlinedrugs such as Indomethacin (anti-inflammatory), Vincristine (anti-cancer), Delavirdine (antiviral) etc., which contain indole nucleus. Similarly, there are at least 12 FDA-approved drugs newlinesuch as Ranitidine (anti-ulcer), Lapatinib (anti-cancer) etc. containing furan as the newlinepharmacophore, demonstrating the utility of these heterocycles. Besides biological newlineapplications, they are also employed in organic materials such as electroluminescent materials, newlinesemiconducting materials, photovoltaics, and other fields. Indole and furan are two emerging newlinebio-based aromatic units for the development of high-quality polyesters, which can promote newlinecircular economy in the polyester industry. Accordingly, much effort has been expended to newlineexpand the repertoire of their reactivity and synthesize novel derivatives containing these newlineheterocycles. newline |
