Role of Mgnrega in Employment Generation in Uttar Pradesh with Special Reference to Prayagraj

Abstract

The main aim of development is to improve the standard of living of people. Development of a nation depends on the development of people of nation. With the progress of human resources, we can unlock the door of modernization. To provide quality of life to rural people, rural development is our top priority and it can be achieved through employment generation. It is observed that majority of poor and unemployed rural people are unskilled worker. During 1951 to 1974, the percentage of population living below poverty line rose from 47% to 56%. (Poverty in India since 1974, 2002). To eradicate poverty, to provide employment opportunities and to improve the standard of living of people various schemes were implemented. Few of them are as follows Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) 1985-86 was launched to provide houses to rural poor. Swarna Jayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SJGSY) 1999 was launched to provide sustainable income to poorest of poor people living in rural and urban areas of the nation. Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) 2000 was launched to provide road connectivity to all villages with population of 1000 (500 in case of hilly or tribal areas). Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojna (SGRY) 2001 focuses on providing wage employment to women, schedule caste and schedule tribes. newline
