Abstract: Tremendous progress in low-cost, smart, Internet-enabled camera sensors and mobile newline newlinedevices has caused increased popularity for various Internet of things (IoT) applica- newlinetions such as video surveillance, video crowdsensing, and habitat monitoring. How- newlineever, IoT sensors are limited in memory, processing capability and energy supply. newline newlineHence, the inherent characteristics of multimedia data impose several critical chal- newlinelenges in the development of source coding schemes for use in camera sensors with newline newlineextremely tight resource budget. Furthermore, the transmission of data on insecure newlinewireless channels causes serious security threats. Therefore, there is a great need to newlinedevelop a secure, lightweight, and energy-conserving encoding scheme, possibly at newlinethe cost of the powerful decoder. newline newlineThe conventional approach for reducing the encoder complexity and overall en- newlineergy consumption is to incorporate distributed video coding (DVC) techniques in newline newlinecamera sensors. While DVC exploits the source statistics at the decoder and re- newlineduces the burden on the encoder, it suffers from increased transmission cost and newline newlinelatency. Moreover, IoT sensors cannot handle the huge computing and memory re- newlinequirements of multimedia cryptographic protocols to guaranty data confidentiality. newline newlineThe stringent requirement of computationally inexpensive, energy efficient, and se- newlinecure source coding scheme has attracted great attention to the emerging compressive newline newlinesensing (CS) framework. CS is a promising joint compression-encryption paradigm newlinethat can achieve substantial reduction in the overall structural complexity and energy newlineconsumption of sensing devices. newline newlineThis research work is focused on the design and implementation of CS-based en- newlineergy efficient secure source coding schemes for multimedia IoT. newline
