Negotiating Violence and Trauma Examining the Representation of Women in Select Novels of Buchi Emecheta and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Abstract

This research work intends to examine how the marginalization of women characters owing to the exertion of violence result into trauma in them. In my work I have tried to examine how violence and trauma are inextricably and inseparably linked with each other. I have endeavoured to focus on the deplorable condition of African women as depicted in Emecheta and Adichieand#8223;s select novels, but more importantly, I have also attempted to show how the Nigerian women characters in these novels negotiate trauma, the double colonizationand#8223; and to register the voice of resistance. This dissertation would point out how the status of women in Nigeria is gradually changing. This thesis will therefore discuss how women characters in the novels of Emecheta and Adichie are constructing and consolidating their identity.
