Abstract: ABSTRACT newlineAssessment of adherence to clinical protocols on safe childbirth practices among skilled birth attendants in selected public healthcare facilities Chennai. newline newlineBACKGROUND Maternal mortality remains a major concern in India, particularly during childbirth. Almost 46 percentage of maternal deaths and 40 percentage of neonatal and stillbirth deaths occur within the first 24 hours after delivery. Identifying gaps in knowledge and practice is crucial for improving healthcare outcomes. newline newlineAIM This study aims to evaluate the adherence of skilled birth attendants to clinical protocols for safe childbirth practices in selected public healthcare facilities. It focuses on SBA knowledge practice attitudes labour outcomes and barriers. newline newlineMATERIALS AND METHODS A Descriptive Observational Research Design was used involving three Government Maternity and Child Health Hospitals and six Urban Community Health Centers. The sample included 160 participants with 80 from MCH hospitals and 80 from UCHCs. Data on demographics and professional details were collected. newline newlineRESULTS Most SBAs demonstrated inadequate knowledge of safe childbirth practices. Approximately 61.9 percentage showed moderate adherence to these practices across all observation periods and 62.5 percentage had a moderately positive attitude. SBAs frequently encountered barriers in labour rooms. Despite this, positive labour outcomes were consistently achieved. newline newlineCONCLUSION The study identifies gaps in knowledge, attitude, practice, and barriers among SBAs. Addressing these gaps through intensive training, refresher courses, and regular audits can improve adherence to safe childbirth practices. Continuous monitoring and supportive supervision are essential for reducing preventable maternal and neonatal deaths. newline newline
