This study explores features of heavy rainfall during the southwest monsoon in India. It newlineanalyzes spatial variabilities, trends, and future simulations of extreme rainfall events newline(EREs) in a detailed and comprehensive way. Apart from the previous investigations newlinethis work uses new criteria for selecting extreme rainfall events. Identifying the moisture newlinetransport mechanisms such as Moisture Rivers gives a comprehensive idea about the newlinepast and future of extreme events. The findings are based on dedicated research. A newlinegeneral introduction is given in Chapter 1. A detailed literature survey on the features newlineof monsoon rainfall with the influence of climate change on monsoon rainfall was newlineincluded in this chapter. Chapter 2 describes a detailed analysis of heavy rainfall events newlinefor the year 2017. The frequency of extreme rainfall events over different regions newlineof India during the monsoon season is studied. Monthly patterns are examined to newlineassess the relative contributions during the four months of the season. Further, possible newlinemechanism responsible for the extreme rainfall events are studied for the different newlineregions. A detailed explanation based on the circulation pattern responsible for the newlinefrequency and spatial distribution of heavy rainfall over various geographical regions is newlinebrought out in this study. newline
