Barleria prionitis, a small perpetual, prickly shrub, belongs to the family Acanthaceae, normally called porcupine flower or Vajradanti with a lot of vernacular names. It is an indigenous herb of Southern Asia and some regions of Africa. The therapeutic use of leaf, flower, stem, seed, shoot, root and in certain cases complete herb of B. prionitis against numerous disorders including cough, fever, jaundice, asthma, severe pain, acne, cut wound is recognized by ayurvedic and other conventional medicinal systems. newlineThe present thesis entailed Phytochemical and Pharmacological Evaluation of Extracts of Barleria prionitis Linn. In the present research work morphological study, physicochemical parameters, extraction of plant material, phytochemical screening of extracts, toxicological studies, and pharmcaological studies were carried out and reported. The root, stem, leaves and flowers of Barleria prionitis Linn. were collected from local sites of Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh, India and identified morphologically and compared with standard pharmacopoeial monograph. The collected plant material was dried and the powdered plant material was used further to reveal various parameters. The dried part of plant Barleria prionitis Linn. were subjected to standard procedure for the determination of various physicochemical parameters. Successive extraction of plant material was done with petroleum ether, Chloroform, ethanol and water. The extracts obtained were evaluated for pH, color and % yield. The various extract obtained after extraction were subjected for phytochemical screening to determine the presence of various phytochemical present in the extracts. Anti-oxidant newlinexx newlineactivity of PEE, CE, EE and AE of Barleria prionitis L. roots, stem, leaves and flowers were determined using DPPH methods. Oral acute toxicity study of plant extracts were done in healthy rats by OECD guideline 423. Pharmacological studies (anti-oxidant, anthelmentic, antimicrobial, immunoomodulatory and anti-inflammatory activity) were carried out and reported. The various extract was evaluated for in-vivo immunomodulatory activity. The various extract of Barleria prionitis Linn. was evaluating for anti-inflammatory activity by using carrageenan induced paw oedema.
