Abstract: | Expansion of rare earth elements at large scale into high end technology environment and economic areas has significantly increased their demand at the global level. The unfilled 4f electronic structure of rare earth elements makes them to contain unique properties in luminescence, electronics and magnetism which might be used to develop many new materials for huge applications like magnetic materials, phosphors, hydrogen storage materials and the catalyst which cater to the needs of the current society. The wide range of their applications begins from daily (e.g. lighter, lighter flints, car alternators, glass polishing medium) to high end technologies (Lasers, magnets, batteries, fiber optic telecommunication cables etc.). Besides futuristic technologies need these rare earth materials e.g. high temperature superconductivity, transport of hydrogen for a post hydrocarbon economy, environmental global warming and energy efficiency uses. Moreover, many modern technologies including computer and networks, advanced transportation, health s care, national defence and many more. Unique properties of these materials form the basis to aid in the technologies perform with reduced weight, reduced emission and energy consumption which features greater efficiency, performance and miniaturization. Automobile brake lights, liquid crystal displays, mobile back lights, all manner of architectural spotlights and a variety of applications are the results of solid state lighting. newline |
