Sustainable management of freshwater aquaculture in the sundarban delta of west bengal india for livelihood security

Abstract

Aquaculture is the one of the most important livelihood opportunity for the islanders of Sundarban delta. It has potential area of freshwater aquaculture for the development of small scale rural aquaculture as maximum household has small freshwater pond for their regular use. Fish mortality during transportation from main-land to different islands and just after stocking is very common to almost all the farmers. Fish seed production in Sundarban area can solve this problem through induced breeding of carps along with scientific carp polyculture, fish based integrated livestock farming, paddy-cum-fish culture can provide additional income for their livelihood. With the objective of to identify suitable and viable aquaculture technologies for the Indian Sundarban region, to produce fish seed using carp hatchery for sustainable supply of prime component of freshwater aquaculture, to enhance productivity and fish yield of freshwater ponds through scientific freshwater aquaculture practices (composite fish culture and integrated farming) suitable for the Sundarban delta and economic upliftment of the farmer through adoption of proper scientific technology for livelihood security this study was undertaken. newline
