Abstract: Telecommunication networks tend to undergo continuous evolution newlinewith frequent social changes and technological advancements A radical newlinechange in telecommunication networks began in the early 1980s is due to the newlineuse of fiber optic cables Fiber optic technology has huge bandwidth nearly newline50 terabits per second Tb s low signal attenuation as low as 0 2 dB km newlinelow signal distortion low power requirement low material usage small space newlinerequirement and low cost The second stepping stone in the evolution of newlineoptical network is the wavelength division multiplexing WDM which newlineprovides the capability of transferring huge amount of data by the users over newlinelarge distance WDM is a very promising technique in which multiple newlinechannels are operated along a single fiber simultaneously each on a different newlinewavelength These channels could be independently modulated to newlineaccommodate dissimilar bit rates and data formats if so desired Thus WDM newlinecarves up the huge bandwidth of an optical fiber into channels whose newlinebandwidths 1 10 Gb s are compatible with peak electronic processing speed newlineOptical fibers employing WDM can support around 1000 times the capacity newlineof their electronic counterparts The optical network thus designed is only a newlinemedium where the data can be transmitted from source to destination The newlineobjective of this thesis is to obtain higher bandwidth higher channel newlineutilization with reduced blocking probability and reduced delay in order to newlinemeet the requirements of high performance optical networks newline newline
