Abstract: The study is an attempt to focus on the evolution of the population in the West Dinajpur district and to highlight the determinants of the evolution and the impact of the same on society, economy and the polity of the district. The starting point of the study is 1947, the year of independence and the birth of West Dinajpur district and West Bengal also. The terminal point of the studyis 1992, because of the bifurcation of the district West Dinajpur into Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur. newline
