Sickle cell anemia (SCA) and malnutrition is health problem in India. Nutritional status of SCA is measured by anthropometric indices and Biochemical parameter. Oxidative stress plays important role in progression of SCA. Hence present work was undertaken to asses, compare and correlate nutritional status, oxidative stress in SCA. newlineAim and Objectives: To evaluate, compare and correlate Nutritional Status, Oxidative Stress, and DNA Damage in sickle cell anemic children of western Maharashtra. newlineObjectives: newline1. To measure nutritional status by using anthropometric indices, biochemical parameter haematological parameter in SCA and control newline2. To determine oxidative stress, hemolytic parameter ie. osmotic fragility of RBCs in SCA and control newline3. To correlate nutritional status and oxidative stress in SCA newlineMaterial and Methods: newlineAn analytical comparative study was conducted in Department of Biochemistry, D Y Patil Medical college, Navi Mumbai and VIMS, Dahanu. SCA confirmed positive patient, between age of 1-12 yrs. were enrolled in research. Total 230 subjects -130 SCA,100 control were enrolled. newlineObservation: newlinePresent study found 70% SCA with malnutrition and 30% of SCA without malnutrition. Low anthropometric indices, decreased nutritional status parameter and Higher oxidative stress, whereas hypoalbuminemia, hyperglobulinemia, hypocobalaminemia, hypocalcaemia found especially in SCA with malnutrition than SCA without malnutrition compared to control. newlineResults and conclusion: newlineSCA predominantly seen in western Maharashtra region. SCA had significantly low height, reduced weight, smaller waist circumference, low BMI (plt0.05), low levels of albumin, hemoglobin, calcium, Vitamin B12 (plt0.001), Vitamin D3 (plt0.05) whereas T. Protein normal, high globulin observed especially in both the subgroup of SCA. Current study observed high MDA, carbonyl protein content (plt0.001), normal DNA damage marker (pgt0.05) when compared to control. we found negative correlation between nutritional status and oxidative stress parameter. newline
