Abstract: | The present study is an attempt to see the effectiveness of Self-Learning Instructional Material on the achievement in English Language acquisition skills among the students of School of Open Learning (SOL), University of Delhi. First of all, the need analysis was done to know the actual needs and problems of the students of SOL studying English paper at their undergraduate level. After knowing the actual status of the requirements of those students, self-learning instructional material was developed through using the approach of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and Theme- based syllabus. This experimental study used the Pre-Test and Post-Test Control Group Design in which Instructional treatment was studied at two levels: one was the control group and another was experimental group consisted of 30 sample each by non- random sampling. The quantitative data was collected through a achievement to assess the achievement in English language acquisition skills. The pre-test and post-test data were analysed using Two way Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) with a 2X2 factorial design to study the main effects and the interactional effects of independent variables (treatment and gender) on the dependent variable (achievement in English language acquisition skills). The present study emphasizes that the actual needs of the students studying through distance education must be addressed in the self-learning instructional material as SLIM is the only way to give exposure to the different language skills. The Communicative Language Teaching, exposure to the authentic material and integrate local culture of the students in the SLIM through ICT, different creative assessment, various exercises on all the language skills, are some of steps that can be taken while creating the teaching learning environment for the Open and Distance learners through the self-learning instructional material. |
