dc.description.abstract | Tannin are the plant secondary metabolites having potential antimicrobial activity and play an important role in plant defence mechanisms. Besides that, tannin has a number of health promoting attributes such as antidiabetic, anticancer, immunomodulatory, antiobesity, etc. Moreover, the byproduct produced from tannin fermentation such as gallic acid and pyrogallol have immense potential in industrial sectors. Inspite of antimicrobial activity of tannin, some microbes have the potential to degrade tannin by producing an inducible enzyme tannase. Among them production of tannase using bacteria is foremost concern. Although reports are there regarding bacterial sources of tannase, however less exploration have reported about the probiotic bacteria as tannase producer. Further tannin fermentation by probiotics also produces components with immunomodulatory effects. newlineConsidering the influence of both probiotic bacteria and fermentative byproducts of tannin as an immunoboosting and health promoting attributes, the present thesis entitled Biotransformation and evaluation of therapeutic potential of tannin rich plant extracts was designed to produce new formulation by microbial fermentation by combining the two different attributes. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The introduction part of the thesis highlights the importance of tannin and their both positive and negative aspects. Besides, it also highlights tannase production by microbes and the industrial importance of the enzyme. It also highlighted the concept of probiotic and metabiotics. Review of literature section covers the findings related to the antimicrobial activity of tannin, probiotic tannase producer and fermentation of tannin by bacteria. The thesis has been divided into three chapters- chapter 1, 2 and 3. Chapter 1 and chapter 2 has been divided into 3 sub chapters while chapter 3 has been divided in to 2 sub chapters. newlinev | P a g e newlineChapter 1A deals with the estimation of tannin content of medicinally important plants and study of their antimic | |
