Abstract: Role of toll-like receptors (TLRs) is crucial in the pathogenesis of LF, as several studies have found that TLRs can recognize various patterns associated with filarial parasites and bind to them, exerting immunoregulatory consequences within the host. Depending on the nature of the different pattern molecules, TLRs induce polarization of macrophages (M1 to M2 or viceversa). Classically activated macrophages (M1) trigger proinflammatory responses within the host, while alternatively activated macrophages (M2) are associated with a reduction in proinflammatory cytokines and play a key role in establishing an anti-inflammatory milieu. Counteracting immunoregulatory molecules maintain immune homeostasis in host bodies. Therefore, this doctoral thesis is designed to identify the novel pattern molecule(s) belonging to the filarial parasite W. bancrofti and design different therapeutic strategies to eradicate the infection load.
