Abstract: Liver is a vital internal organ that play key role in metabolism, drug newlinedetoxification, protein and cholesterol synthesis and is also responsible for newlinetransportation and secretion of plasma proteins. It also play critical role in blood newlinesupply through portal vein (~70%) and hepatic artery (~30%) via hepatic sinusoids. newlineAbout 30% of whole blood passes through liver per minute and approximately, 100 newlinemillion lymphocyte passes through it per day. Liver consists of collection of cells newlineincluding parenchymal cells and non-parenchymal cells that play a vital role as a newlinedefensive organ against pathogens. It acts as an immunological barrier against the newlineblood that passes through the gastrointestinal tract. Apart from hepatocytes, which newlineare responsible for metabolic functions and detoxification, the liver also consists of newlinethe endothelial cells, kupffer cells (KCs), hepatic stellate cells (HSC), lymphocytes newlineand biliary epithelial cells. Liver diseases are one of the major reasons for death and newlinenearly twenty nine million people suffer from liver diseases. In India, approximately, newlineten lakh people are newly diagnosed for liver cirrhosis each year and it is the 10th newlinemost common reason for death according to World Health Organization (WHO). newlineNotable symptoms and signs are observed in the late phase of liver disease and newlinedepending on the kind and extent; liver damage is classified as acute and chronic newlineliver damage. When liver diseases progress slowly over the years it is known as newlinechronic liver failure (CLF) but when liver function is lost rapidly, is known as acute newlineliver failure (ALF) or fulminant hepatic failure. ALF can lead to hepatic newlineencephalopathy and may be responsible for multiple organ failure. Liver newlinetransplantation is the only treatment for such scenario; however, only 10% patients newlinecan receive liver transplantation. Therefore, extensive search for safe and effective newlineliver protectors are required. newline
