Abstract: | Abstract newline newlineThis research establishes the need for spatial planning approach concerned to water management at the regional as well as local level for both urban and rural areas. Study focuses on understanding Water Management in terms of resource, institutional/operational, service delivery, financial, governance aspects. newlineWater plays a significant role in regional development and in improving the quality of life. More than 54% of India is facing high to extremely high water stress. An average of 70.6 percent of urban households have access to individual water connections, and only 21 percent of the wastewater generated is treated (Census 2011). newlineFrom literature review, it found that there have been numerous efforts globally in developing water sustainabilitywith either one or two dimensions of sustainability but not comprehensively at the Metropolitan scale. Further, present studies do not address urban water management in association with population growth, spatial expansion and change of land use aspects. In this context, realistic water assessments in Metropolitan regions need to be carried out for better water management. Studyattempted to assess water supply at multiple spatial scales and adopts five aspects of sustainable water development. The study attempted to analyse the intra and inter-region water supply performance in the context of Urban sprawl and growth. newlineFindings revel that factors such as resource availability, infrastructure, and water governance can improve water effectiveness and efficiency. The results indicate that Financial and Institutional/operational, Governance Indicators influence index value. A strong correlation exists between densities, population growth rate, and slum population on the water supply management index. Thestudy helped in identifying critical clusters for improvement and proposed water management strategies with spatial planning guidelines. newline newline |
