Abstract: | : Among the various kinds of fuel cells, solid oxide fuel cells are very important as they offer high efficiency, fuel flexibility, very less emission and use solid ceramics as electrolytes.Dental ceramics are among the most significant restorative materials due to their biocompatible, aesthetic and physical properties that are comparable to the natural tooth structures. Zirconia ceramics is used as both an electrolyte and as a dental material but a rare earth oxide yittria is used as a stabilizer. A cheaper alternative calcia is used in this research. The aim of this project was to evaluate the suitability and compare the properties of Calcia Stabilised Zirconia prepared from Mechanical route under cryogenic conditions for it to be used in Solid oxide fuel cell application and also as a dental material. newlineZirconia stabilization and its transformation toughening characteristics has been explored with powders obtained by mechanical route after 80hours of milling of initial micron sized powders. Powder characterization using FESEM, XRD, EDS is carried out and average particle size is measured. Pellets prepared by compaction and sintering at different conditions were characterized for mechanical and electrical properties. Density, Vicker hardness, flexural strength and compressive strength are measured. These properties were compared with commonly used but a expensive Yittria stabilized zirconia.2probe method for impedance spectroscopy test is carried out and electrical properties like conductivity, resistivity and dielectric strength are calculated.It was seen that not much difference exist in properties and in CSZ sufficient oxide ion conductivity is there with activation energy of 0.59eV can be a alternative cheaper option in comparison to the YTZP and CSZ ceramics can be used as an electrolyte in SOFC . newline newlineThis work concludes that CSZ can be used as an alternative cheaper material and it can be produced using mechanical route from cheaper micron sized powders. It can be used as a dental and an electrolyte mater |
