Abstract: Generation Expansion Planning (GEP) problem determines what, newlinewhen, and how much new power plants need to be built over a long-range newlineplanning horizon, to meet the electricity demand. GEP is a problem of newlinerecognizing optimal type, capacity, placement, and time to be built of the new newlinepower plants at least cost. GEP is a mostly deliberated subject by the power newlinesystem planners and decision makers in the power sector. Primarily, GEP has newlineattempted to attain the requirements of the power systems, with vertically newlineunified state-owned power sector having control in generation, transmission, newlinedistribution and trade sectors. Conversely, the liberalization of power sector newlinealong with the industrial growths has directed to a quick alteration of power newlinesystems and energy markets. newline Consequently, several challenges have risen and they have been newlineprogressively integrated into the GEP problem. Nowadays, the concern of newlineglobal warming has huge significance for the decision of GEP problem. To newlinereduce the global warming, several countries have taken summits, newlinedeliberations and agreements. The Tamil Nadu state (a state located in south newlinepart of India) power system is considered for this study. Previously, various newlinemethods have been employed to handle the GEP problem. Those methods newlinehave focused on cost minimization alone. However, the cost minimization, newlineemission minimization, and reliability maximization have been considered newlineconcurrently in this study. Moreover, the older power plants can progressively newlinedrop their efficacy, consistency, and financial feasibility, and violate the newlineallowed levels of pollutant emission. newline
