Abstract: | In the recent years, the escalating demand for reducing newlineconsumption of fuel and relevant costs have led to the need for replacing newlinelarger parts and components with alloys of lighter metals, both in the newlineaerospace and automotive related sectors. Alloys of Mg (magnesium) have newlinebecome one of the widely preferred material for fabricating light in weight newlineaerospace and automotive related structures, owing to their superior newlinemechanical relevant stiffness, efficient recyclability, less density, easily newlinemachinability, exemplary room temperature related strength etc. For instance, newlineAZ80A, a heat treatable alloy of Mg, has been extensively employed for newlinefabricating superior strength aerospace and automotive relevant parts and newlinecomponents including rotor hubs and gear boxes of helicopters, super charger newlineparts, frames of motorcycles, engine parts of automotive, road wheels, etc. newline Alloys of magnesium (Mg) possesses an exemplary potential to newlinetake over copper, aluminium and steel based parts and components in the newlineautomotive and aerospace sectors owing to their reduced density in newlinecombination with superior strength, exceptional degree of castability, a larger newlinethermal conductivity, magnificent electromagnetic interference based property newlineof shielding and a distinguished damping capacity. newline At the same time, the alloys of Mg cannot be welded easily by newlineemployment of fusion related welding techniques. Additional issues related newlineduring the employment of fusion based welding techniques for welding alloys newlineof Mg includes partial melting, cracks, porosity etc., which arises during their newlinesolidification, which degrades the strength of the welded joints. So, there newlineprevails an inevitable need for identification of a reliable and suitable welding newlinetechnique to join together the alloys of Mg for increasing their usage in newlineaerospace and automotive related sectors. newline |
