Abstract: Alginate, unexplored carbohydrate metabolism in bacterial species, has been reported for its biosynthesis and degradation. It finds diverse applications in various industries, including food, chemical, biomedical, and textile. Seaweed-derived alginate extraction is complex and energy-consuming, leading to concentration and quality losses. In contrast, bacterial alginate synthesis is simple, renewable, and offers unique water retention properties. Functional and genomic characterization of alginate-synthesizing bacterial species enhances their application in industries. newlineBacterial alginate lyases are more sustainable than other sources like algae, molluscs, fungi, and viruses. Physical and chemical methods of alginate break down are complex and environmentally hazardous, while enzyme-based degradation is eco-friendly and cost-effective newline
