Magnesium alloys have emerged as crucial materials in various newlineindustries, including automotive, aerospace, biomedical, defence, and newlineconsumer electronics, due to their impressive mechanical and physical newlineproperties. These properties include exceptional dimensional stability, high newlinespecific strength, good damping capacity, high rigidity, excellent impact and newlinefatigue strength, and substantial electrical and thermal conductivities. newlineHowever, the limited ductility and secondary processing-induced newlinecrystallographic asymmetry of magnesium and its alloys restrict their newlinewidespread application. To address these limitations, adding rare earth newlineelements (REEs) to magnesium alloys has been adopted, leading to further newlineenhancements in mechanical properties. Incorporating rare earth elements newline(REEs) into the alloy imparts several benefits, including improved mechanical newlineproperties, refined microstructure, enhanced castability, alloy melt purification, newlineand anti-oxidation properties, making them suitable for various applications. newlineThe low melting point and high thermal expansion of magnesium alloys newlinemake them susceptible to defects like cracks and pores when subjected to newlineconventional welding. Consequently, achieving satisfactory welding efficiency newlinethrough fusion welding becomes challenging. To overcome this hurdle, friction newlinestir welding (FSW) has been recommended as a promising solution for joining newlinemagnesium alloys. Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process newlinecharacterized by energy efficiency, low-temperature operation, and high newlinequality welds. newline
