dc.description.abstract | The use of Composite materials in automotive and aeronautical newlineindustries where the service temperatures fall in the range of 120°C 150°C newlinehas created a need for the study of their behavior at elevated temperatures. newlineHowever, mechanical or structural components made of composite materials newlinemay suffer large damage when subjected to impact loads, with the newlinecorresponding decrease of their residual strength and the subsequent risk of newlinestructural failure under service loads. The possibility of using composite newlinematerials for load-bearing applications in future supersonic transport aircraft newlinehas created a need for data on materials at elevated temperatures. newlineThe present study focuses on the effect of temperature, velocity, and newlinestacking sequences on the impact damage of composite laminates. The task newlinewill be accomplished by manufacturing composite laminates using hand newlinelayup, vacuum bagging, and compression molding techniques for the different newlinelaminates. For impact and residual strength analysis, American Society for newlineTesting and Materials standard specimens are cut from laminates. The newlinesamples are tested with a Fractovis drop impact tower at elevated newlinetemperatures. The residual strength of the impacted samples is estimated by newlineconducting a flexural test for Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic laminates and a newlinecompression test for Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic laminates with Acoustics newlineEmission Monitoring. The effect of the temperature on the residual strength newlineafter impact and the nature of the damage will be investigated. newline | |
