Abstract: | newline The preservation and revitalisation of the entire built environment are included in the newlinesustainable built form of a historic settlement. At the current rate of urbanisation, when newlinealmost 40% of India is urbanised, the biggest loser is the historicity of this great civilisation. newlineIndia has a few of the oldest planned towns showcasing the perfect pattern and layout. Over newlinethe years, the historical cities and settlements have embraced within themselves different newlinetypes and styles of development and their implication. The layers of the historic fabric, as newlineare currently seen in most of our towns/ cities, do not present any substantial difference in newlinehow they are perceived. One of the most noticeable features of Indian cities is their newlinecombination of high population density in the core areas and relatively low density in the newlinenewer developments. The new additions to the original settlement appear to be incompatible newlinewith the overall structure and sustenance of the city. They are exerting a lot of pressure on newlinethe historical core areas. Also, most areas representing historically important parts of the newlinetowns are currently in disrepair, losing its identity and character. If appropriate steps are not newlinetaken, they may lose their relevance. Current research undertakes to study and analyse the newlinesustainable urban form in the context of historic towns. So that sustainability attributes are newlinetaken ahead and reintroduced into the overall urban planning concepts, legislations and rules. newlineA detailed analysis of the policies applicable in urban areas with special reference to heritage newlinewas evaluated as part of the current research study. Secondly, the available literature on newlineUrban form, specifically sustainable form, was verified. Documentation was done to newlineunderstand the trend of research on the topic and the gaps in the current stream of research. newlineAs a third and important element of the study, available literature on heritage cities, various newlineinternational charters and policy support documents were also evaluated |
