Abstract: | Abstract newlineBackground: Inflammation associated with insulin resistance is a threatleading to the newlineprogression of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The relationship involving inflammatory newlinemediators, atherogenic parameters and insulin resistance in anthropometry determined type 2 newlinediabetic males was evaluated in the light of genetic polymorphism of Peroxisome Proliferator- newlineActivated Receptor gamma 2 (PPAR gamma 2), namely Pro12Ala. newlineObjectives:To study the biochemical markers with reference to inflammatory and atherogenic newlineattributes in overweight and obese T2DM, as regards genetic polymorphism, namely Pro12Ala to newlinefind out as to whether the markers of inflammation and atherogenesis could differentiate obese newlinefrom overweight. A total of 180 type 2 diabetic males (90 each in overweight and obese)on oral newlinedrugs and with a history of diabetes (greater than five years) were included for the study. newlineSuitable exclusion criteria were applied. newlineMethods: Blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, plasma insulin, and the inflammatory newlinebiomarkers namely hs-CRP, ferritin, haptoglobin, and adiponectin were quantitated. HOMA-IR newlineand QUICKI were computed to assess insulin resistance. Atherogenic parameters were also duly newlinequantitated. newlineResults:The typical indices of insulin resistance, markers of atherogenesis and inflammatory newlinemediators exhibited different characteristics with wild type and heterozygous variant of newlinePro12Ala thereby pointing to the link featuring a conglomerate of insulin resistance, newlineatherogenesis, inflammation, andadipocyte differentiation. newlineConclusion: The markers of inflammation, indices of atherogenesis and insulin resistance could newlinethus be used in T2DM to distinguish overweight from obese males, a point acquiring relevance newlinein personalized medicine, when considered with Pro12Ala polymorphism newline |
