Abstract: | newline Urbanization got intensified in the wake of industrial revolution in the western world which led to the expansion of infrastructure such as transport and communication and propelled increased rural to urban migration. The agglomeration of population, predominance of non-agricultural activities and better provision of social amenities including health and educational infrastructure emerged as distinguishing features of settlements following the industrialization of agrarian economies (Bhagat, 2005). In India during the British rule, urban area was defined as including every municipality of whatever size, every cantonment, all civil lines not included in municipal limits and every other collection of houses permanently inhabited by not less than 5000 persons which is of an urban character though not under municipal government. This definition continued until 1961 Census, left the scope for state census superintendents to apply their judgments in declaring the settlements as urban. The latter aspect has been considerably reduced since 1961 Census, which defined the urban on the basis of two important criteria namely: i) statutory administration, and ii) economic and demographic aspects. This study explained the tittle The trend of urbanization and its impact on socio-economic conditions of Rohtak district, India . Present study is based on both Primary and secondary data. Urbanization trend in Rohtak district is showing through the decadal maps of main urban settlements with Rohtak, Meham, Kalanaur, Sampla and Lakhan Majra. In July, 1997, Jhajjar district was created after bifurcating Rohtak district into Rohtak and Jhajjar districts and the present Rohtak District consists of Rohtak and Meham Block, while Jhajjar and Bahadurgarh blocks are in Jhajjar Distt. rest in other activities. |
