Abstract

Among the women novelists of Indo-Anglian literature, newlineShashi Deshpande is an eminent novelist on the Indian literary newlinehorizon with nine novels and four collections of short stories. The newlinewomen novelists in English in India emerged as the male novelists newlineignored the issues relating to the women in India while the women newlinehad been suffering from mental trauma as they were not given a newlineplace of honour. They had been victims of gender discrimination. newlineOppression and inhumanity due to the strict code of conduct and newlinemoral values imposed on them for centuries together. They had newlinebeen treated as inferior to men and gives a subordinate role in the newlinefamily as well as in the society. No doubt certain social reformers newlineand politicians had been trying to reform the conditions of women newlinein Indian society. In this field the efforts of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, newlineSwami Dayanand Saraswati, mahatma Gandhi contributed much to newlineremove the social evils related to the life of women and also made newlineefforts to improve their social and economic status. newline
