Abstract: The thesis has reflected on the position of the game of cricket in the development of sport as an emergent feature of twenty-first century late capitalist consumer culture. Cricket survives and flourishes today because those who follow it find meaning within its playing and representational text (Cronin and Holt 121). Cricket in India is everything except the game. The thesis has delineated the notion that the cultural field of sport where playand#8223; has a significant discursive status ( playand#8223; is central to sportand#8223;s foundation narrative) is at constant odds with the dominant forms of cultural capital (derived from economic/ capitalism). newline
