Nalagarh in colonial and post colonial Punjab1815 to 1866 AD

Abstract

A princely state also called native state was a nominally sovereign entity of the British Indian empire, not directly governed by the British but under an Indian ruler subject to paramountcy of the British Crown. At the British withdrawal from India, the integration and accession of princely states into the Indian Union was a complex and a challenging task. The present research explores the political, social, economic history of the Nalagarh State, formerly part of the Punjab Province, under the British paramountcy from 1815-1947A.D.There after its constitutional march and final integration to its rightful place, the state of Himachal Pradesh in 1966 A.D., on basis of linguistic, geographical, and cultural affinity otherwise a forgotten state of Himachal Pradesh. In the post-independent era the State witnessed numerous political development like merger in PEPSU (1948 A.D.) transfer to the Punjab State (1956A.D.), amidst the State s people protest movement aimed at educating opinion on the integration process into the Indian Union. The study examines numerous progressive socio-economic laws passed during the period 1815-1966 A.D. which helped to accelerate the wheel of change in the State. newline
