Evaluation of Inflammatory Biomarkers in Chronic Periodontitis with and Without Diabetes Mellitus Type II and to Assess the Effect of Momordica Charantia Bitter Gourd Oil as an Antioxidant Adjuvant in Periodontal Treatment

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease have a bidirectional link. The co-existence of both diseases in an individual tries to influence the other. An exaggerated inflammatory response to periodontitis in a diabetic individual is due to chronic hyperglycemia and Insulin Resistance. Concurrently, the susceptibility to periodontitis in diabetic individuals is higher than non-diabetic individuals. Bitter gourd has been known for its medicinal value in the treatment of diabetes in various parts of the world. In addition to its hypoglycemic action, the antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of bitter gourd have the potential to provide beneficial results to enhance periodontal wound healing when it is given in adjunct to mechanical therapy newline
